Inventions By Women
Although most of us think about men whenever we consider the inventors throughout history, the fact of the matter is that there have been many ingenious inventions by women as well. Many of these affect our lives in some way or another even today, although they may have been invented quite a few years ago. Many of these inventions by women tend to be things that were at one time considered to be work that women did, such as cleaning and cooking but there are also some interesting inventions that fit into a typical man's role as well.
The first patent that was given to a woman in the United States did not come until the year 1809. It may be possible that there were some inventions by women before that time but they were simply patented by men. The original patent was issued to a woman by the name of Mary Dickson Kies for process that was used in order to weave a straw hat with the thread or silk. Most of the inventions by women that were patented in those early years tended to be things which helped in the areas of cooking, clothing and tools. Martha Coston is also another woman out of history who patented an idea, although this particular idea had been originally thought up by her husband. After his death, however, she perfected the idea and pursued a patent for it. It had to do with flares and they were eventually used in order to help with communication on naval ships. Although similar devices have been used up until this time, hers improved on the existing idea. Some of the other interesting inventions by women that have come about throughout the years include rotary engines, by Margaret Knight, the windshield wiper blade which was developed by Mary Anderson and a circular saw which was thought up by Tabitha Babbitt. The fact of the matter is, without these inventions by women, our life would be a little bit more difficult today. Not only did they help to improve the lives that they lead during that time, they also have developed some very ingenious tools that are used by millions of people around the world today. One of the inventions by women that I could not pass up talking about is the development of the chocolate chip cookie by a woman named Ruth Wakefield. Although this is not necessarily one of the most profound inventions by women that has been developed throughout all history, it certainly is one that I have enjoyed in my lifetime.
