Ancient Inventions

When many of us think about inventions, we consider some of the more modern ones such as the cotton gin or the telephone. The fact of the matter is, there are many ancient inventions that also shaped the way the world is today, thousands of years before these modern conveniences were ever conceived. Let's take a look at some of these ancient inventions and although they are far too numerous to mention them all, there are a few that are quite noteworthy.

First of all, it should be noted that there is usually a direct relation between ancient inventions and anthropology. Many times, an invention is given credit at one particular time but it is later discovered that it may have been used hundreds or perhaps even thousands of years earlier. A good example of this is the Archimedes screw which was thought to have been invented during the second century B.C. by a Greek inventor who shared the same name as his invention. It is now widely accepted that this same type of the device was used hundreds of years earlier by Nebuchadnezzar in order to water the famous hanging Gardens of Babylon.

Of all of the ancient inventions that have come into existence, the one that is probably thought of the most is the wheel. Simply put, almost everything that we use in some way relies on this particular invention. It is been used all throughout history and it is really unknown when the concept first came into existence. Regardless of who came up with this idea, however, it certainly is among the most important of all ancient inventions.

Many ancient inventions also came about as a result of warfare, similar to the way modern-day inventions also take place. For example, the ancient Egyptians had a special type of chariot which had swords and long spikes attached to the wheels. Whenever they would travel into a group of the enemy, they could easily take out a dozen or more men, simply by riding the chariot through. In addition to this, weapons of warfare and siege weaponry are among some of the more notable ancient inventions that have been discovered. Many of these are horrible in the way that they were used and it is really unthinkable that they were used on a regular basis.

There's no doubt that there are other ancient inventions that will come to light through continued anthropological studies. As they are found, they will enlighten us on the past and help us to have a deeper appreciation of the fact that these individuals were rather creative and the way that they invented things. As long as there is a correlation between ancient inventions and anthropology, we will continue to have more to learn.
