18th Century Inventions
Most people think about the American or perhaps the French revolution that took place during the 18th century whenever they consider this time in history. The fact of the matter is, it is when history really begin to be recorded so that it could be remembered well in modern-day history. Not only did many historic events take place during this century, there are also many 18th Century inventions which helped to shape the world of that day. Many of these inventions are still in use and we would have a difficult time living the lives that we do without them. In 1709, the first piano was made and just a few short years later, a tuning fork was developed. The piano is one of the most beloved instruments that is in existence today. Many instruments throughout history have come and gone but the piano seems to be one that will stick around for the long term. This is one of the greatest musical enhancements that came about as a result of 18th Century inventions. The steam engine is also something that came about during this century. This engine was used for centuries in order to power many different things, including locomotives. Although this is one of the foremost of the 18th Century inventions, the steam engine is not used as often today because the internal combustion engine is favored. There are some companies, however, that are thinking of reviving this old invention for use in industrial settings.
Benjamin Franklin
was one of the best known inventors in this particular century. One of the inventions that he is famous for is that of a lightning rod. Most people don't realize that the lightning rod is what resulted from his series of kite experiments. Although any school-age child will be able to tell you that Benjamin Franklin flew a kite in a lightning storm, it seems that the educational system forgets to tell people why he was doing it. Benjamin Franklin was also behind many 18th Century inventions, such as the Franklin stove and bifocals. This spinning Jenny is something that many people have not heard of but it was actually the item that ushered in the Industrial Revolution. It is a spinning wheel that contains multiple spools and can do the job of many humans that used to have to do the spinning by hand. It was a rather simple machine but the effect that it has on us even down to the day is astounding. There are many other 18th Century inventions that are almost too numerous to mention. Oil lamps, threshing machines, the circular saw and steamboats are all examples of the ingenuity that was displayed during this century.
